DPP Drops Charges Against Anguyo's Co-accused
The Director of Public Prosecutions has discontinued accessory to murder charges against three individuals who were jointly accused with prison warder Moses Anguyo, who is currently on death row. The court also heard that a relative who aided in Anguyo's arrest is facing threats. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has withdrawn charges against three individuals who were co-accused with prison warder Moses Anguyo. Anguyo himself is on death row at Luzira Maximum Prison.
The DPP, through Senior State Attorney Stephen Ariong, discontinued accessory to murder charges against Peter Anziku, Peter Anziku alias Dickson Okwonzo, and Hellen Amviko. The trio had been on trial before the special criminal High Court session in Kiboga.
Trial Judge Jane Okuo Kajuga formally discharged the three on September 3, 2026, stating they were free to go. The prosecution had alleged that the three, being relatives of Anguyo, assisted him in evading arrest following the murders of ASP Catherine Hope, PO1 Bright Akishuri, Sarah Ayebare, and Salson Niwagaba.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution highlighted that Beatrice Lenia, the sister of Moses Anguyo who played a role in his apprehension, is reportedly facing threats. The court was asked to caution the discharged individuals against issuing threats to Ms. Lenia and her family upon their release.
Additionally, the court ordered the return of a firearm, which had been presented as an exhibit, to the Uganda Prisons Service to enhance security at Kiboga Central Prison. Hellen Amviko’s Shs700,000, seized at the time of her arrest, was also ordered to be returned to her.
Judge Kajuga explicitly cautioned the discharged trio that any threats made against Beatrice Lenia or her family would be considered a criminal offense. This decision brings a close to the accessory charges for these three individuals while Anguyo’s case proceeds.
