King Oyo's final wish: To return home for Empango

The late King Oyo of Tooro had a profound desire to return to his kingdom and people, especially for his 31st Empango, his coronation anniversary. According to his Prime Minister, Omuhikirwa Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, the King had requested that the details of his ill health be kept confidential.

This wish stemmed from King Oyo’s desire to prevent anxiety among his subjects. The public narrative that he was abroad studying was in line with his wishes to maintain privacy. “As someone serving him, it was my responsibility to respect his wishes and protect his privacy,” stated Mr Rwomire during a press briefing.

King Oyo, who was 34 at the time of his passing, had reportedly been confident in his recovery and eagerly anticipated reuniting with his people for the Empango celebration on September 12. Tragically, this date will now mark his final resting place.

His Majesty passed away on August 27 in Dallas, USA, where he had sought medical treatment. His remains are expected to arrive in Uganda today and will be received by President Yoweri Museveni, who previously served as the King’s caretaker.

King Oyo, recognized as one of the world’s youngest monarchs, had a significant impact across generations, leaving Tooro and Uganda in deep mourning. His vision for his kingdom was often lauded, leaving behind a legacy of grand plans for his people.

Amidst the grief, discussions have emerged regarding succession. While the Prime Minister mentioned the existence of a young prince, the head of the Babiito royal clan expressed unawareness of an heir. Mr Rwomire has called for these matters to be resolved privately among elders to maintain the kingdom’s dignity and avoid public divisions.

The body’s arrival at Entebbe International Airport is scheduled for today, followed by transport to Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal. The burial is planned for September 12, commencing with a church service at St John’s Cathedral, with final rites expected by 2 pm at the Karamba burial grounds.
