King Oyo's Remains Arrive in Uganda, President Museveni Receives Them

The remains of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom have officially landed in Uganda, marking a significant moment in the nation’s mourning period. President Yoweri Museveni was present at Entebbe Airport to receive the body.

The final farewell for King Oyo is slated for September 12, which will conclude the official nine-day mourning period.

Earlier, hundreds of mourners had gathered at Humura Primary School playground in Kyegegwa District, awaiting the arrival of the late King’s body. The body was transported via a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) helicopter.

The playground, situated close to the Kyegegwa-Kyenjojo-Fort Portal road, was under heavy security presence, with both UPDF and police personnel deployed to manage the event. Security vehicles were visible along the route, underscoring the importance of the occasion.

For the Batooro community in Kyegegwa, the stop at Humura holds deep cultural and historical resonance. The school has a long-standing connection with the Tooro royal family. Notably, the late King’s grandfather, Sir George Rukiidi III, and his father, Prince Kaboyo, had planted trees at the school. King Oyo himself planted a tree there last year, making his final journey through the area particularly poignant for the local residents.

Following the ceremonies in Kyegegwa, funeral service vehicles are expected to convey the King’s body to Fort Portal. This journey, spanning over 100 kilometers, will pass through Kyenjojo and Kabarole districts before reaching the Tooro Kingdom’s capital, where the body will be taken to Karuziika Palace. This marks a solemn procession towards the final resting place of the revered monarch.
