King Oyo's Remains Return to Uganda for Final Journey

A somber atmosphere descended upon Entebbe International Airport on Friday, September 4, 2026, as the charter aircraft carrying the remains of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV touched down. The 34-year-old monarch’s final journey began with the landing of the US-registered aircraft at precisely 12:00 PM.
President Yoweri Museveni, who had served as a mentor to the young King, was present among the dignitaries, including members of the Royal Family, government officials, and Tooro Kingdom leaders. A visibly emotional Queen Mother, Best Kemigisha, alongside Princess Elizabeth Bagaya and other relatives, shed tears as the casket was offloaded by officials from A-Plus Funeral Services.
The casket was draped in barkcloth by four members of the royal family in traditional Tooro attire, followed by the placement of both the Ugandan and Tooro Kingdom flags. The Uganda Police Force Band played a solemn rendition, adding to the poignant atmosphere.
President Museveni then laid a wreath on the casket and bowed in respect. He recounted his recent interactions with King Oyo regarding his health, noting the government’s support for his medical treatment abroad. Following a private meeting with key royal figures, the casket was loaded onto a UPDF military helicopter.
At 1:15 PM, 75 minutes after its arrival, the helicopter departed for Humura Playgrounds in Kyegegwa District, where King Oyo’s subjects awaited to pay their final respects. The ceremony at Entebbe underscored the deep respect and grief felt across the nation for the departed monarch.
