Parliament Honours Late Omukama Oyo as a Visionary Leader

The Parliament of Uganda has formally recognized and paid homage to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, celebrating his impactful reign as a developmental monarch. During a special session, legislators from across the aisle lauded the fallen king for his unwavering commitment to the Tooro Kingdom’s cultural identity, unity, and progress.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja led the tributes, commending Omukama Oyo’s dedication to improving the lives of his people. She specifically highlighted the King Oyo Foundation’s role in providing educational scholarships to underprivileged youth, significantly boosting access to primary and secondary education. The late monarch was also recognized for his efforts in revitalizing agriculture within the kingdom and for his active support of government health initiatives, particularly concerning child health and nutrition.

Omukama Oyo’s role as a champion for the youth in the fight against HIV/AIDS was also a key point of discussion. His designation as a UNAIDS champion in 2016 underscored his commitment to advocating for prevention, eliminating mother-to-child transmission, and engaging young people in the broader response to the epidemic.

Furthermore, Parliament acknowledged his environmental advocacy, including spearheading a tree-planting campaign to combat pollution and the degradation of River Mpanga. As a global tourism ambassador, his symbolic climb of the Rwenzori Mountains and gorilla tracking expeditions were praised for showcasing Uganda’s rich tourism potential on the international stage.

Legislators also noted his ability to harmonize his cultural leadership with his Christian faith, demonstrating that tradition and religious conviction could coexist. His advocacy for preventive healthcare and his efforts to address non-communicable diseases were also celebrated. There were calls for continued support for projects initiated by the late king, such as a proposed children’s hospital and the development of a new football stadium, which some suggested should be renamed in his honor.

The Parliament’s tribute serves as a testament to Omukama Oyo’s legacy as a forward-thinking leader who profoundly impacted his kingdom and contributed to national development.
