Parliament Mourns Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV

The Ugandan Parliament convened to officially honor the memory of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro, who recently died in Dallas, USA. Lawmakers spoke of his remarkable reign, which began when he ascended to the throne at the tender age of three, making him a historically significant figure.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja described King Oyo as a resilient and loving leader who extended his influence beyond the Tooro Kingdom to Uganda as a whole. She highlighted his significant role as a champion for youth in the fight against HIV and AIDS, a position he held under UNAIDS since 2016. The Prime Minister also noted his efforts in modernizing Tooro’s institutions and promoting education and vocational training for the youth, citing the construction of the Mucwa Youth Centre.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of Health, emphasized King Oyo’s impact extended far beyond his kingdom’s borders. He also took the opportunity to address the rising cancer epidemic in Uganda, urging for greater public awareness and preventative measures, noting that King Oyo succumbed to cancer.

The Opposition, through acting Leader of the Opposition Patrick Nsamba Oshabe, praised King Oyo for balancing heritage with development, stating he “kept one hand on the kingdom’s past and the other on its future.” Nsamba called for unity among the people of Tooro during this time of mourning and encouraged them to resolve internal differences peacefully.

Legislators also acknowledged his contributions to socio-economic welfare, particularly through promoting tourism in the Rwenzori sub-region and advocating for environmental conservation. Preparations were underway to receive the King’s body at Entebbe International Airport, with President Museveni expected to lead the reception ceremony.
