The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) has announced the appointment of Michael Ochan Otonga as Acting Executive Director. Otonga, who previously served as the Director of Finance and Corporate Services, will step into this role following the completion of Ernest Rubondo’s second term on August 31, 2026.
The PAU Board of Directors, through its Chairperson Lynda Biribonwa, expressed gratitude for Rubondo’s contributions to the growth of the Authority and Uganda’s petroleum sector during his tenure.
Following Rubondo’s departure, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development has approved the appointment of a substantive Executive Director. However, details regarding this designate will be released at a later date. In the interim, the Minister has appointed Otonga to ensure the PAU’s operations continue seamlessly.
This interim leadership is designed to maintain stability within the Authority, assuring stakeholders and the public that management structures and reporting lines remain unchanged. The PAU reiterates its commitment to its mandate of effectively and efficiently managing Uganda’s petroleum resources and advancing the nation’s petroleum industry.
The Board is actively working on the onboarding process for the new Executive Director, emphasizing that business continuity and service delivery will not be compromised during this transition period. The PAU plays a crucial role in regulating and monitoring the country’s oil and gas sector for sustainable national development.
