Tooro Kingdom Gears Up for King Oyo's Final Journey Home

The final journey of the beloved King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV of Tooro Kingdom is underway, with his remains set to arrive at Entebbe International Airport today. A solemn procession will then transport the King’s body from Kyegegwa District to the Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, a journey spanning over 100 kilometers.

This return marks the commencement of an official nine-day mourning period, a significant cultural observance for the Tooro people. The burial is scheduled for September 12, the final day of mourning and a date that holds special significance as it is also the anniversary of King Oyo’s coronation in 1995.

The decision to use an open carriage for part of the journey has been made to allow subjects from various counties, including Kyaka, Mwenge South, and Burahya, to bid a final farewell to their monarch. While the procession will move at a slow pace, stops will be limited to ensure the orderly continuation of the journey to the Karuziika Palace.

Security has been significantly heightened across Kyegegwa and Fort Portal, with joint forces from the police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces ensuring the safety and order of the proceedings. Preparations at Karuziika Palace are also in full swing, with additional tents being erected and enhanced security checkpoints, including scanners and health screening, in place.

Some traditionalists within the Babiito clan reportedly raised concerns about the roadside viewing arrangements, suggesting it deviated from cultural norms. However, the kingdom’s leadership has affirmed that the amended protocol aims to provide a final opportunity for subjects to honor their King, emphasizing that respectful and orderly conduct is expected from all mourners.

This poignant period of mourning and remembrance is imbued with a deep sense of loss, yet also a profound respect for the late King’s legacy and the cultural traditions he represented. The coinciding of his burial with his coronation anniversary adds a layer of profound symbolism to this solemn occasion.
