Uganda Fish Vendors Warned on Digital Licenses and Fish Size

Vendors at Busega Market have been put on notice by the UPDF 155 Marine Battalion to secure digital licenses and cease trading immature fish, with authorities warning of potential arrests. The operation, which also targeted Wandegeya Market, resulted in the confiscation of several tonnes of undersized fish.

Captain Muzamiru Gimogoyi, commander of the operation, stated that the focus is currently on educating traders about essential documentation, such as fish movement permits and fish traders’ licenses. While vendors found without these permits were warned, those with correctly sized fish but lacking licenses were allowed to proceed for the time being.

Gimogoyi reminded vendors that legal fish sizes are 11 inches for Tilapia and 20 inches for Nile Perch. He stressed the importance of allowing fish to mature for reproduction, thus sustaining the resource for future generations and employment.

Fisheries official Edrisa Matovu explained that digital licensing will enable better tracking of fish from capture to market, aiding in the fight against illegal fishing practices. He emphasized that all stakeholders, including fishers, transporters, and traders, must be licensed and adhere to approved fishing methods.

Fish vendor Asuman Ssendijja encouraged his colleagues to comply with regulations, arguing that adherence will lead to improved fish quality and quantity, potentially lowering market prices. He believes that preventing the sale of immature fish will allow fish populations to recover and grow.

During the engagement, Busega fish vendors’ leadership also reminded President Museveni of a pledge made to their SACCOs. While vendors are willing to comply, they are seeking government support to formalize their businesses. Captain Gimogoyi confirmed that these enforcement operations will continue across Kampala and other districts.
