President Yoweri Museveni has officially bestowed the name “Pearl Sweet” upon Uganda’s crude oil. The declaration took place during an oversight visit to the Kingfisher Development Area, where a formal Crude Oil Naming Ceremony was held.
President Museveni stated that the name “Pearl Sweet” represents a crucial step in Uganda’s efforts to harness its oil and gas resources for economic growth and transformation. He emphasized that these resources must be managed to build a sustainable and productive economy, drawing lessons from other African nations.
The President highlighted the importance of an integrated strategy for petroleum development, encompassing refining, power generation, industrialization, and human capital development. He pointed out that establishing a local refinery will significantly cut down on transportation costs and reduce Uganda’s annual petroleum import bill, which stands at approximately US$2 billion.
Furthermore, President Museveni stressed the need to utilize associated gas, rather than flaring it, to support power generation and other domestic uses. He commended the collaborative efforts between oil companies and government agencies, urging for strategic and well-considered development of the nation’s finite oil reserves.
The goal, as outlined by the President, is to use future petroleum revenues to invest in critical long-term national assets like power infrastructure, transportation networks, and education, rather than in luxury imports. He also encouraged continued exploration to maximize the country’s petroleum potential.
Reflecting on the nation’s progress, President Museveni noted the deliberate investment in training Ugandans in petroleum-related fields. This focus on local expertise is seen as essential for effective management and benefit from the country’s oil wealth. The naming of “Pearl Sweet” is thus a pivotal moment, giving Uganda’s crude oil a distinct identity as it prepares for commercial production and its role as a catalyst for broader economic change.
