Uganda's Crude Oil Officially Named 'Pearl Sweet' After Rigorous Selection Process

The journey to naming Uganda’s maiden crude oil export, now officially known as ‘Pearl Sweet,’ involved a comprehensive process ensuring global marketability and national significance.

According to Ms. Irene Bateebe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, selecting a distinct trading name is crucial for Uganda’s crude to compete on the international stage. The naming initiative involved several key stages:

• Technical Evaluation: The intrinsic qualities of the crude oil were meticulously analyzed.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Government bodies and the Joint Venture Partners (CNOOC, TotalEnergies, and UNOC) were consulted.
• Branding Criteria: Potential names were evaluated against established branding standards.
• Market Appeal: Factors such as industry recognition, sensitivity, and ease of pronunciation were considered.
• Presidential Approval: The final chosen name received the endorsement of President Yoweri Museveni.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Monica Musenero, explained that ‘Pearl Sweet’ reflects the oil’s characteristics, particularly its low sulfur content, symbolizing purity and environmental care. She added that the name also represents wisdom and strength.

President Museveni elaborated that the “sweet” aspect refers to the oil’s lack of sulfur, which simplifies refining and reduces costs. The “Pearl” signifies Uganda itself.

The President emphasized that proceeds from oil sales should be invested in long-term infrastructure projects, such as power stations and railways, rather than immediate consumption.

The Kingfisher Development Area is nearing completion, with production expected to reach 40,000 barrels per day by the end of September, marking a significant milestone for Uganda’s oil industry.
