UPC Members Defy Disciplinary Committee, Citing Leadership Legitimacy Concerns

Three prominent members of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) have publicly rejected summons from the party’s disciplinary committee. Alex Ogwal, Chris Ongom, and George Ewal were accused of actively supporting President Yoweri Museveni and other National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidates during the recent general election. Instead of appearing before the committee on September 3, 2026, they addressed the media in Lira City.

Their defiance stems from a belief that the UPC’s current executive committee, led by Jimmy Akena Obote, lacks legal authority. They presented a letter from the Electoral Commission indicating that the committee’s term expired on August 1, 2025. Consequently, they argue that any disciplinary actions or summons issued by this expired leadership are invalid.

Mr. Ogwal further defended their actions by referencing the UPC Constitution, which defines an offense as supporting a rival party’s candidate against a nominated UPC candidate. He noted that since the UPC did not nominate a presidential candidate for the 2026 elections, their support for President Museveni did not constitute a breach of party rules.

The group also highlighted perceived inconsistencies in how party rules are applied, pointing to past instances where other members allegedly supported rival candidates without facing repercussions. They asserted their commitment to working with the current government for the economic benefit of the Lango sub-region, citing progress on some presidential pledges like the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium and cattle restocking, while also noting unfulfilled promises.

Alex Oremo Alot, another former LC5 chairman, urged unity and acceptance of election outcomes, encouraging all party members to collaborate with elected officials.
