Drivers across the United States are now paying more for diesel than ever before. The average price for a gallon of diesel has reached $5.85, a significant increase from $3.71 just a year ago. This record high surpasses the previous peak seen after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The surge in diesel prices is closely linked to the escalating conflict involving Iran, which began in late February. This geopolitical event has led to a sharp rise in wholesale oil prices, directly impacting the cost at the pump.
Diesel fuel is essential for a wide range of commercial vehicles in the US, including trucks, trains, buses, farming equipment, and construction machinery. Consequently, the rising fuel costs have a broad economic impact, affecting transportation and logistics across the nation.
In an effort to curb these rising costs, US President Donald Trump has sought to secure new oil deals. A recent agreement with Venezuela aims to boost oil production, with plans for significant investment in strategic oil fields. However, some analysts remain skeptical about the deal’s effectiveness in resolving long-standing issues within Venezuela’s oil industry.
The global supply of oil has been further constrained by Iran’s actions, including the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for international oil transport.
These high fuel prices are creating public discontent, particularly with the midterm elections approaching in November. President Trump’s approval ratings have seen a decline, with public sentiment on the conflict also registering low approval.
Price increases are not uniform across the country. Consumers in Western states are experiencing even higher diesel costs, with average prices in Washington reaching $6.81 per gallon, due to factors like regional taxes and greater distance from oil production centers. Gasoline prices have also reached historically high levels, with the average gallon costing $4.15.
