Ssezibwa Bridge Nears Completion, Promising Relief for Motorists

Construction on the new Ssezibwa Bridge, a Shs54 billion project, is nearing its final stages, bringing relief closer for motorists who have endured difficulties due to the aging original structure.
The 60-meter double-span concrete bridge, built by local contractor Dynaco Ltd, is part of an 18-month project that began in June 2024. While initial completion was slated for December 2025, unforeseen weather and cash-flow issues have pushed the revised opening to February 3, 2026. However, project officials indicated that motorists could start using the bridge as early as September 12, 2026, once approach road works are finalized.
Leaders from Kayunga and Mukono districts, who recently toured the site, expressed optimism about the project’s quality and progress. Kayunga District LC5 chairman Andrew Muwonge stated that the new bridge will end the “untold suffering” of road users. The inspection team also included local mayors and RDCs.
The old bridge, in service for seven decades, had become a significant impediment, particularly for heavy vehicles. Trucks carrying sugarcane from Kayunga have been rerouted since 2024, facing longer and often impassable alternative routes during the rainy season, leading to increased costs.
Beyond the bridge itself, the project encompasses surveys, designs, and construction of 1.6 kilometers of related infrastructure. Remaining tasks include pavement layers, asphalt surfacing, and embankment work. The old bridge will eventually be dismantled, with the government deciding its fate.
Local leaders have also requested street lighting for the new bridge area due to past security concerns and urged residents to protect the new infrastructure from vandalism. The completion of the Ssezibwa Bridge, alongside recently finished links to Nakasongola and Kamuli, is expected to significantly boost trade and transport between several districts.
