Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced a special initiative, “Open Park Days,” providing free entry to numerous national parks and wildlife reserves from September 25th to 27th. This move is designed to stimulate domestic tourism and encourage Ugandans to experience the nation’s rich biodiversity firsthand.
The initiative coincides with preparations for World Tourism Day, which will be celebrated in Mbale on September 27th. UWA’s Acting Commissioner for Tourism and Business Development, Dorcus Rukundo, urged Ugandans to become firsthand ambassadors for their country. “You cannot promote what you have never experienced. Let us explore Uganda, experience our wildlife, and share our story with the world,” she stated.
Popular destinations like Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, and Kidepo Valley National Parks are included, along with several wildlife reserves. While park entry fees are waived, visitors will need to cover their own transportation, accommodation, and any optional activities.
This effort aims to address historical barriers such as high costs and limited information that have deterred locals from visiting these sites. By making parks accessible, UWA hopes to foster a deeper appreciation for conservation and highlight the connection between tourism revenue and community livelihoods. The World Tourism Day theme this year, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” also underscores the growing role of technology in the sector.
Furthermore, the decision to host World Tourism Day in Mbale signifies a strategic effort to decentralize tourism and promote the eastern region. Uganda Tourism Board CEO Juliana Kagwa emphasized the goal of broadening tourism’s geographical reach and diversifying experiences beyond traditional wildlife attractions. The region, known for Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls, and its unique cultural heritage, is poised to gain greater attention.
To support ongoing engagement, UWA is also expanding conservation education, with a new center in Mbale and plans for similar facilities nationwide. The authority also acknowledged the crucial role of content creators and media in promoting less-explored destinations and driving domestic travel.
