C-Care Unveils Ambitious 10-Year Plan for Specialized Cancer Care in Uganda

C-Care has laid out a comprehensive 10-year plan focused on bolstering its oncology services in Uganda. This strategic move aims to increase access to specialized cancer treatment options locally, thereby decreasing the number of Ugandans who must travel overseas for care.

The announcement was made during the 2026 C-Care Excellence Awards ceremony, which also celebrated the organization’s 30 years of operation in Uganda. Azhar Sundhoo, CEO of C-Care East Africa, highlighted oncology as a key area for future investment, citing the growing burden of cancer in the country.

Sundhoo explained that C-Care intends to build a strong foundation in other specialized medical fields before committing to the substantial investment required for comprehensive oncology services. “Once we have the strong foundation of making sure we can take care of all the other specialised care, because oncology requires significant investment, this is something that C-Care will look at in the next 10 years,” he stated.

This expansion into oncology is part of C-Care’s broader objective to offer advanced medical treatments within Uganda, including procedures like aneurysm clipping, which have previously necessitated international travel for patients. The company is also enhancing its cardiac care capabilities with a new catheterization laboratory and plans for open-heart surgery at C-Care International Hospital Kampala (IHK).

Furthermore, C-Care is exploring the integration of robotic surgery, anticipating benefits such as minimally invasive procedures and faster patient recovery. The healthcare provider is also eyeing regional expansion, with plans to establish a presence in Kenya and Rwanda within the next two years, starting with Kenya.

Currently, C-Care operates 17 clinics and five regional hospitals in Uganda, serving approximately 700,000 patients annually. The Ministry of Health, represented by Dr. Daniel Kyabasinga, welcomed C-Care’s contributions and emphasized the importance of collaboration between public and private healthcare sectors, mentioning ongoing government efforts towards a national health insurance scheme. Dr. Ian Clarke, a founder of the organization, expressed confidence in C-Care’s regional growth prospects.
