Tayebwa Lauds Prof. Kwesiga's Transformative Leadership at Kabale University

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa recently paid tribute to Professor Joy C. Kwesiga, celebrating her significant impact during her 21-year leadership as Vice Chancellor of Kabale University. Tayebwa highlighted her crucial role in transforming the institution from its nascent stages into a university of national repute and importance.

Speaking at a special ceremony held on September 4, 2026, Tayebwa emphasized that Prof. Kwesiga’s influence extended far beyond her vice chancellorship, profoundly benefiting higher education and the wider Kigezi community. He described her career as a testament to opening opportunities for numerous individuals, stating, “I am not here to celebrate your exit. I am here to celebrate a testimony, a record of service that opened doors for very many people, not only in Kigezi but beyond Kigezi.”

Tayebwa also recognized Prof. Kwesiga as a pioneer for women in leadership, underscoring that her achievements demonstrated that excellence is not dictated by gender. He acknowledged her deliberate decision to serve her home region, even when other high-profile opportunities, such as at Makerere University, might have been available.

The Deputy Speaker further attributed Kabale University’s growth to the foundational vision of its founders and its unique transition into a public university, making it a benchmark for community-owned institutions. He noted that the university’s success has served as a model for the establishment of public universities in other sub-regions.

Looking ahead, Tayebwa challenged the university to ensure its academic programs and research directly address the pressing issues facing the Kigezi region, such as poverty and malnutrition. He urged a focus on science, medicine, and other disciplines that can provide practical solutions. Prof. Kwesiga’s distinguished career in higher education spans over five decades, including extensive experience at Makerere University before her long tenure at Kabale.
