Uganda Seeks Investment from Korean Diaspora

Uganda is extending an invitation to its citizens living in South Korea, urging them to channel their capital, skills, and technological expertise back into the homeland. This appeal comes as the Ugandan government seeks to strengthen trade and investment connections with South Korea.
The call to action was made during a diaspora outreach event in Seoul, organized by Uganda’s embassy in Tokyo, which holds accreditation for South Korea. This engagement precedes the Uganda-Korea Trade and Investment Meeting, scheduled from September 6 to 10, a forum designed to foster collaboration between government officials and businesses from both nations.
Uganda’s Ambassador to South Korea, Tophace Kaahwa, highlighted the significant role of Ugandans abroad as “grassroots ambassadors.” She emphasized their potential to contribute to Uganda’s economic growth through investments, technology transfer, and skills development, particularly in promising sectors such as tourism, mineral development, science and technology, and agribusiness.
Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, Uganda’s Second Deputy Prime Minister, shared the nation’s economic ambitions, noting the current economy’s valuation of approximately $70 billion and a target of $500 billion by 2040. He assured the diaspora of Uganda’s improved infrastructure, including extensive road networks and ongoing railway extensions, alongside a secure and stable environment conducive to investment.
Further efforts are underway to formalize diaspora engagement through a comprehensive national policy, aimed at enhancing coordination and access to government services. The upcoming Uganda Diaspora Convention in December is also highlighted as a key platform for Ugandans living abroad to connect and contribute to national development.
According to the President of the Ugandans in South Korea Association, Hamza Kyamanywa, there are currently 654 Ugandans residing in South Korea. Participants at the outreach also raised discussions on professional development and the need for enhanced consular services.
