Kasese Grapples with Severe Water Shortage Amidst Extended Dry Spell

Residents of Busongora North in Kasese district are facing an escalating water crisis, amplified by an unusually prolonged dry spell. This scarcity is severely impacting access to safe water for both domestic needs and livestock.

While Kasese district boasts over 65% water coverage, certain areas within Busongora North, such as Rugendabara, Kitswamba, and Kabatunda-Kirabaho town councils, along with Bwesumbu sub-county, are experiencing critically low coverage, estimated at just 35%.

Usual water sources, including ponds and wells, have significantly diminished or dried up completely. Residents report being forced to trek considerable distances to find potable water, with women bearing the brunt of the increased burden on household chores.

The dry conditions have extended beyond the typical July-August period, reaching into September, intensifying concerns for farmers and the general populace reliant on these sources. The situation has led some families to resort to contaminated water sources, raising fears of increased incidences of waterborne diseases.

Local leaders are appealing for urgent intervention from district authorities and development partners to extend safe water services to the most affected communities. The health implications are already evident, with health facilities reporting a surge in cases of typhoid, particularly among children, linked to poor sanitation practices and contaminated water.
