Uganda is attracting considerable attention from Nigerian businesses looking to expand their operations. Currently, no fewer than 23 Nigerian companies have officially registered their interest in investing within the East African nation.

Dr. Sam Omara, who oversees economic and commercial diplomacy at Uganda’s High Commission in Abuja, confirmed the registration numbers. He noted that this level of engagement reflects a rising confidence in Uganda as a favorable destination for both investment and general business activities. Furthermore, it highlights Nigeria’s potential as a significant market for Ugandan products.

Discussions are already underway for several substantial ventures. These include a potential strategic partnership valued at approximately US$75 million and ambitious plans for a fertilizer manufacturing plant, with an estimated cost of US$800 million.

The scope of interest extends across a diverse range of sectors. Nigerian companies are exploring opportunities in oil and gas, textiles, financial services, information and communication technology (ICT), fintech, manufacturing, and agro-processing. Specific agricultural interests include coffee, dairy, horticulture, palm oil, and livestock. Other areas include machinery, real estate, transport and logistics, industrial research, cement production, pharmaceuticals, and media services.

This burgeoning economic relationship aims to foster more than just increased trade between Uganda and Nigeria. The overarching goal is to cultivate enduring commercial partnerships that will spur job creation, drive industrial development, encourage innovation, and bolster Africa’s economic integration through initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Uganda’s current exports to Nigeria are valued at around $34.6 million, with key products including tobacco, air transport services, pharmaceuticals, minerals, coffee, hides and skins, powdered milk, palm oil, fish, and stone and glass. The increased interest from Nigeria signifies a promising future for bilateral trade and investment.
