Tooro Palace Intensifies Security for King Oyo's Body Viewing

As the period for public viewing of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s remains approaches its conclusion, security at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal has been significantly enhanced. The kingdom is implementing stricter access protocols to ensure the dignity of the royal funeral rites.

The daily viewing, which commenced last Saturday following the return of the King’s body, will continue until Friday, September 11. The event is open to the public for those wishing to pay their final respects to the monarch, who passed away on August 27.

Organizers have introduced a ban on mobile phones within the viewing area after an incident where a video of the deceased king was reportedly recorded and shared on social media. “We don’t want anyone with a phone in their hands inside the palace taking pictures or receiving phone calls,” stated Richard Rwabuhinga, chairman of the organizing committee.

Further restrictions were imposed on Monday, requiring mourners to leave behind items such as watches, eyeglasses, pens, and bags before entering the viewing space. These measures are in place to preserve the sanctity of the funeral and the privacy of the late King.

Despite the tighter security, hundreds of mourners, cultural leaders, and delegations from across Uganda have been visiting the palace. Dignitaries including Vice President Jessica Alupo and Minister Henry Tumukunde have already paid their respects.

King Oyo, who reigned for over three decades after being enthroned at the age of three in 1995, will be laid to rest at the Karambi Royal Tombs on Saturday. The Tooro Kingdom is observing nine days of official mourning, with Karuziika Palace serving as the focal point for funeral activities.
