The fourth edition of the Corporate Games, scheduled for October 11 at NEC Grounds in Bugolobi, has set an ambitious goal of providing 5,000 “Mama Kits” to expectant mothers. This initiative aims to combat preventable maternal deaths, a cause championed by Ian Rumanyika, the founder of Corporate Games Uganda.
Rumanyika’s personal motivation stems from the loss of a colleague six years ago, who died during childbirth despite reaching a health facility. “Sixteen women die trying to give birth every day,” Rumanyika stated at the launch event. “Yet some of the reasons that lead to these deaths are preventable.”
Last year, the event successfully distributed over 3,000 Mama Kits. This year, the organizers aim to double that impact by distributing 5,000 kits. Funds for the kits will be generated through the sale of running kits, priced at Shs30,000 each, and through corporate sponsorships. Each Mama Kit costs Shs50,000 and contains essential items like gloves, a surgical blade, and cotton wool, designed to improve safety during delivery.
Several organizations have partnered with the Corporate Games to support this cause. Lynn Tukei from the Capital Markets Authority highlighted their commitment to personal well-being and health. Stephen Asiimwe, CEO of the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), emphasized the private sector’s role in addressing high infant and maternal mortality rates, likening the initiative to providing an “incubator” for potential future leaders.
Betpawa Uganda’s director, Allan Tumushaba, noted that the cause aligns with their community-focused sponsorship model, which aims to make a direct impact at the grassroots level.
