Free Medical Camp Honors Late Minister Sarah Mateke in Kisoro

Hundreds of Kisoro residents are currently benefiting from a comprehensive free medical camp held at the Kisoro Mayor’s Gardens. The event, organized to commemorate the second anniversary of the passing of the late State Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, provides a range of essential health services.

Services offered include screenings for critical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Additionally, attendees can participate in blood donation drives and get tested for various other diseases. The camp is scheduled to continue until Friday, drawing significant numbers of people eager to receive medical attention.

Dr. Emmanuel Bahane, Medical Superintendent of Kisoro Hospital, highlighted the late minister’s substantial contributions to the hospital’s development. He noted that Mateke played a key role in enhancing the hospital’s infrastructure and improving the quality of service delivery, particularly in maternal health.

The Bashitsi Development Foundation, in collaboration with several health organizations and students from Kisoro Institute of Health Sciences, has spearheaded this initiative. The foundation’s director, Janan Munyambabazi, stated that the medical camp aims to perpetuate Minister Mateke’s legacy of community support, which extended to women’s groups, youth programs, education, and health.

Munyambabazi emphasized that the family chose a medical camp as a direct way to give back to the community that the late minister served so passionately. They intend to continue supporting Kisoro residents in her memory, acknowledging her significant efforts in raising the district’s profile nationally.
