Retired Orthopaedist and Wife Arrested in Mityana Over Five Recovered Foetuses

Police in Mityana have apprehended a retired orthopaedic practitioner, 70-year-old Samuel Madaaba, along with his wife, following the discovery of five foetal remains. The arrest occurred on Monday after law enforcement received intelligence suggesting illegal abortion activities were taking place at Madaaba’s residence in Gombolola Cell, Busimbi Division, Mityana Municipality.
An intelligence-led operation led detectives to the home, which was subsequently secured as a crime scene. A thorough search yielded a disturbing find: five foetuses stored in a bucket, alongside a blood-stained mattress, medical instruments, and other items deemed as exhibits. Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, confirmed the operation was prompted by information linking Madaaba to unlawful pregnancy terminations.
“It is shocking and worrying. It is bad and concerning,” Kigozi stated regarding the discovery. Madaaba’s wife was present at the residence during the search and was also taken into custody. Two other individuals found on the premises were questioned as the investigation seeks to unravel the methods used for the alleged abortions and identify any potential accomplices.
Investigators revealed that Madaaba, who retired from government service about a decade ago, allegedly continued to offer various medical services from his home, including dental and other treatments, despite his retirement. While some instruments found suggested activities like tooth extraction or eye treatment, the primary illegal activity uncovered was abortion.
Police are preparing to forward the case file to the State Attorney for review, with potential charges including procuring abortion, conspiracy to commit abortion, and aiding or abetting the offense. The incident has sparked concern among local residents, raising questions about Madaaba’s continued practice outside regulatory oversight. Police have cautioned against illegal medical activities and recommended recognized family planning methods for those not ready for children.
