Ugandans can anticipate improved travel conditions as the government has officially cleared a Shs249 billion contract for the much-needed rehabilitation of the Mbarara-Ishaka Road. The announcement was made by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa on Tuesday.
Tayebwa confirmed that the Solicitor General has approved the contract, and the construction work will be undertaken by China Railway 18th Group. This development addresses a long-standing concern regarding the state of the road, which has been a subject of public discussion.
During the same event, Tayebwa also highlighted other infrastructure and development initiatives. The government is reportedly working on the Mbarara-Ibanda road, with plans for the Mitooma-Rukungiri road to follow, acknowledging the need to address multiple road networks across the country.
In addition to road works, two significant industrial projects are planned for the Ankole region. An industrial hub will be established on 70 acres in Kyeizooba, Bushenyi District, and a substantial industrial park dedicated to food processing is slated for development in Ruhengyere. These projects aim to generate employment opportunities, particularly for the youth.
Further economic measures include the removal of Shs39 billion in taxes affecting tea farmers in Bushenyi. Tayebwa also touched upon advancements in the health sector, noting an increase in the health budget and plans for expanding specialized healthcare services, including the establishment of regional cancer centers and the enhancement of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
These infrastructural and economic developments signal a commitment to improving connectivity and fostering growth within the region.
