Warder sentenced to death, magistrate awarded Shs 20m, Watoto Church heritage listing overturned

A prison warder, Moses Anguyo, has been handed a death sentence by the High Court in Kiboga after admitting to the murder of four individuals, including two prison officers and the family of his superior. Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga imposed the sentence for four counts of murder, citing the deliberate nature of the killings and potential ethnic hostility as aggravating factors.

In a separate case, Magistrate Steven Johnson Waidhuuba successfully sued his mother and brother for defamation, securing Shs 20 million in damages. The court found that allegations made against him regarding their late father’s estate, which questioned his integrity as a judicial officer, were published with malice.

The High Court also quashed the government’s decision to designate property occupied by Watoto Church Ministries and Kampala Playhouse Limited as a protected historical and cultural site. Justice Bonny Isaac Teko ruled the designation unlawful, irrational, and procedurally improper, noting a lack of consultation and proper approval.

Additionally, businessman Kirumira Bryan, known as Bryan White, was granted mandatory bail after spending 293 days on remand, exceeding the constitutional limit for pre-trial detention. While granted bail with stringent conditions, including residency restrictions and substantial sureties, the court upheld his right to liberty.
