Ibanda Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Godfrey Mbetegyereize, has issued a stern warning to political leaders, particularly local councillors, urging them not to downplay or dismiss reports concerning attempted child abductions within the district.
Mbetegyereize highlighted that at least five incidents of attempted child abductions have been officially reported to the police in various parts of Ibanda. While current investigations have not yet yielded conclusive evidence to link suspects directly to the alleged crimes, the RDC stressed that this lack of immediate proof should not be a basis for leaders to invalidate the reports.
He expressed deep concern over statements from some councillors who are reportedly telling constituents that these abduction cases are not occurring. Mbetegyereize argued that such pronouncements could inadvertently undermine the ongoing investigations and foster confusion and distrust among the public.
“As leaders, they should condemn such acts and leave the security agencies to establish the truth,” Mbetegyereize stated, emphasizing that the reported cases are indeed under active investigation. He called for a unified approach, encouraging cooperation between political figures, residents, and security agencies.
The RDC implored anyone with information regarding suspected child abductions to report it directly to the police instead of spreading unverified information. He believes that public cooperation is crucial for security agencies to ascertain the facts and ensure that those found responsible are held accountable.
