As India prepares to host the 18th BRICS Summit, international journalists are gaining a firsthand understanding of the nation’s priorities for the bloc’s cooperation. A recent familiarization tour provided media representatives with insights into India’s commitment to disaster resilience and the development of robust infrastructure.
Journalists visited the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) in New Delhi. These visits underscored disaster risk reduction and resilient infrastructure as crucial areas for BRICS collaboration under India’s 2026 chairmanship. The focus is on enhancing cooperation in tackling climate-related risks, developing resilient infrastructure, leveraging technology, securing financing, and improving disaster preparedness.
The CDRI, headquartered in New Delhi, works globally to promote infrastructure capable of withstanding natural disasters and climate shocks, facilitating quicker recovery post-event. This engagement follows the third BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction, where member states pledged to strengthen their collective efforts in this domain.
Disaster resilience is particularly vital for developing nations like Uganda, where floods, droughts, and other climate-related events significantly impact livelihoods and economies. The BRICS platform offers a potential avenue for sharing expertise, technology, and strategies for building infrastructure that can better withstand unpredictable weather patterns.
The media familiarization program is part of a broader effort to engage a large contingent of international journalists expected to cover the summit.
