Tight Security as Tooro Prepares for Late King Oyo's Burial

Fort Portal is under heightened security as Tooro Kingdom finalizes arrangements for the burial of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, scheduled for Saturday. The Police and the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) have deployed significant personnel to Karuziika Palace, St. John’s Cathedral, and the Karambi Royal Tombs.

Strict access and vehicle control measures will be enforced at these locations to manage the large number of mourners expected. At Karuziika Palace, additional security has been deployed, and barricades are in place at the main entrance. Only authorized vehicles will be permitted onto the palace grounds.

Rwenzori West Police Commander, Mr. Job Wabwire, stated that a limited number of vehicles, including the hearse, the Queen Mother’s car, and other official vehicles, will be allowed into the cathedral grounds. VIPs will be directed to park at Kyebambe Girls Secondary School and will proceed to the cathedral on foot after screening.

The St. John’s Cathedral is prepared for the funeral service, with tents set up to accommodate attendees. Bishop Reuben Kisembo of Rwenzori Diocese confirmed the church’s readiness and collaboration with the government for the event, with the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda set to lead the service.

Preparations are underway to ensure a dignified and culturally fitting send-off for the late King Oyo, who passed away on August 27 and whose body arrived in Tooro on September 4. Public viewing at Karuziika Palace concludes Friday evening, followed by an official vigil for visiting dignitaries and delegations. The king’s final procession to the Karambi Royal Tombs, where he will be laid to rest with his ancestors, begins Saturday morning.
