King Oyo's Battle with Aggressive Cancer: A Journey from Nairobi to the US

The sudden passing of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was attributed to an aggressive cancer, angiosarcoma, a diagnosis first made in Nairobi, Kenya. Initially experiencing unexplained pain in July 2025, King Oyo’s condition prompted a series of medical investigations, first in Kampala, Uganda, where initial tests and physiotherapy provided no answers.

It wasn’t until after his 29th coronation anniversary in September 2025 that a PET scan in Nairobi revealed the severe diagnosis. This discovery initiated an international medical effort, with the King receiving treatment in Germany before moving to the United States.

In Germany, chemotherapy commenced in November 2025 at Thoraxklinik Hospital and later Krankenhaus Salem Hospital. Despite these efforts, the cancer proved relentless. The King was subsequently transferred to Dallas, Texas, in the US, where he was treated at Dallas Medical Centre and Baylor Scott & White Hospital. According to reports from his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, his condition saw remarkable improvement during this period, and he remained optimistic about his recovery.

King Oyo had opted to keep his health condition private, even briefing his Prime Minister to inform subjects he was on a working visit and pursuing studies abroad. He maintained communication with key royal figures and staff until his health took a sudden downturn on August 27, 2026. Despite medical intervention and life support, he was pronounced dead at 2 pm US time on that day.

His passing marked the end of a reign that began in childhood, leaving the Tooro Kingdom to navigate leadership transition. The King was laid to rest at the Karambi Royal Tombs, a traditional resting place for Tooro royals.
