The Babiito dynasty of Tooro Kingdom, with roots tracing back to the ancient Bunyoro-Kitara empire, is in mourning following the passing of its king, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. King Oyo, who ascended to the throne at the tender age of three, was recognized for his gentle demeanor, humility, and dignity.
At 15 years old, King Oyo officially took over the reins of leadership from his regents in a vibrant ceremony marking his 15th annual coronation festival (Empango) on April 17, 2010. Upon assuming full responsibilities, he identified low literacy rates and the pervasive HIV/Aids pandemic as the most pressing challenges facing his kingdom.
His reign, though tragically cut short, saw him strive to address these significant issues. The kingdom now faces the solemn task of performing the final rites for its monarch and navigating the succession process. Security has been heightened in Fort Portal ahead of the burial, with special traffic arrangements in place for the event at the cathedral and along the procession route to the Karambi Royal Tombs, where traditional rituals will be conducted.
The transition of power and the rituals surrounding the burial are of great significance to the kingdom’s traditions and its people. The Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, has expressed her deep personal grief, while discussions around succession have been a topic of public interest, though royal family members have largely refrained from commenting directly on the matter during this period of mourning.
