Wakiso District Earns Parliamentary Praise for Accountability and Value for Money

The Wakiso District Local Government has received commendation from the Parliamentary Local Government Public Accounts Committee (LGPAC) for its demonstrated accountability and effective use of funds in executing government programs. This praise followed a physical inspection of projects and financial records at the district headquarters.

The committee, led by representatives including Ivan Kyeyune (MP, Nakasongola Constituency), noted that Wakiso had successfully addressed all audit queries presented. Kyeyune highlighted that Wakiso was the first district visited to provide satisfactory explanations and evidence of value for money, emphasizing the committee’s role in ensuring public officials are held accountable.

Members also recognized the district’s technical team for their preparedness during the inspection, noting a significant improvement in organization compared to their previous appearance before Parliament. The inspection covered key areas such as the construction of Buloba-Kitawuluzi and Mutubagumu-Nangabo Health Centre IIIs, road projects, and the management of funds from the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP).

Despite the positive assessment, concerns were raised regarding the district’s low rate of recovering outstanding funds. Chief Administrative Officer Mark Jude Bukenya committed to intensifying recovery efforts, aiming to reclaim at least Shs1 billion within the next six months. The committee also inspected road infrastructure and government assets, including vehicles and motorcycles, urging contractors to adhere to project timelines and advising the CAO to report on the allocation of motorcycles.

Recommendations were also made for the immediate official opening of the newly constructed health centers to benefit local communities. The committee concluded that the inspection aimed to bolster accountability and ensure public resources are judiciously managed for the welfare of citizens.
