Wakiso District Urges Increased Road Funding Amidst Rapid Expansion

Wakiso District’s Road Committee has formally requested the Ministry of Works and Transport to allocate more funds for the upkeep and expansion of the district’s road network. This plea comes as the district grapples with the challenges posed by significant population increases, accelerating urbanisation, and a growing demand for improved road infrastructure.

“Wakiso significantly contributes to the national economy, and its growing urban status warrants greater government investment in infrastructure,” stated Wakiso District Woman MP Betty Ethel Naluyima during a recent committee meeting. She emphasized that current funding levels are insufficient to meet the district’s expanding infrastructure needs and to ensure the quality and durability of its roads.

The committee also resolved to enhance the quality of district roads beyond basic maintenance like bush clearing and grading. The new approach will involve applying murrum, a strategy intended to extend the lifespan of roads, mitigate erosion, and prevent rapid deterioration. This move aims to create more resilient and long-lasting road surfaces.

District Chairperson Eng Ian Kyeyune highlighted the necessity of a coordinated strategy for road development. “We need to have a coordinated approach to road development so that our roads connect the different parts of the district and support economic activities,” he said. The district is exploring the possibility of an internal ring road connecting various key areas, including Kasangati, Kira, and Kakiri, to improve connectivity and facilitate economic growth.

While acknowledging the support received through the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP) for several specific road projects, members stressed that additional funding is crucial. Busiro South MP Kenan Opio indicated that the matter would be raised in Parliament, advocating for an increase in the Shs1 billion currently allocated for road maintenance to better match the district’s extensive needs. The committee plans to collaborate with local and central government bodies to identify and address gaps in the road network, ensuring improved quality and sustainability across the district.
