Museveni Reflects on Africa's Future and Uganda's Oil Reforms on 82nd Birthday

President Yoweri Museveni recently marked his 82nd birthday, a milestone that prompted reflections on Africa’s trajectory and Uganda’s strategic interests. He extended gratitude to the millions who sent birthday wishes, expressing a desire to continue serving for at least another 18 years.

The President highlighted three critical historical missions he believes are essential for Africa’s future prosperity and security. These include fostering continental economic integration to create a common market that empowers wealth creators, achieving strategic security through political unity, exemplified by the East African Federation, and leveraging the inherent brotherhood among Africa’s diverse linguistic groups.

Museveni also addressed recent reports concerning Uganda’s petroleum supply, clarifying a misunderstanding that arose from a project launch in Buyala. He recalled past instances where Uganda’s public service procurement practices, particularly in acquiring petroleum products, involved costly middlemen.

“The real story is that when we were fighting Idi Amin, among other things, we used to say that he had destroyed governance in Uganda by putting abatasoma (the ones that did not go to school) in charge of running the affairs of the Country,” Museveni stated.

He revealed that a significant reform was implemented in 2023 through an agreement with Vitol, a global refinery and bulk supplier. This new arrangement has led to substantial price reductions for essential fuels: diesel, petrol, and aviation fuel. The President specifically thanked Kenyan President Ruto for his cooperation in facilitating Uganda’s access to the Kenyan oil pipeline, a move that has improved the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of Uganda’s fuel imports.
