Arua Nuns Appeal for Shs106 Million to Restore Historic Convent

The Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu, based at their Ediofe community in Arua Diocese, have launched an urgent appeal for financial assistance to restore their aging convent. The structure, which is over eight decades old, was initially constructed by the Comboni Missionary Sisters before being transferred to the local congregation.

Beyond serving as a residence for the nuns, the convent is a crucial center for prayer, religious formation, meetings, and community hospitality. Sister Florence Amule, the community’s team leader in Arua, detailed the severe deterioration caused by decades of harsh weather and continuous use. Issues include a leaking roof, cracked walls, damaged ceilings, faulty electrical systems, and inadequate water and sanitation facilities, all of which compromise the safety and functionality of the building.

A fundraising committee has been formed to spearhead the effort to gather the necessary Shs106 million. While internal church fundraising initiatives are planned, the committee emphasizes the critical need for external support. “The current condition of the building affects the well-being of the sisters and limits their capacity to host formation programmes, retreats, volunteers, and other community activities,” stated Mr. Paul Lule, the chairperson of the fundraising drive.

Members of the organizing committee highlighted the nuns’ dedication and the community’s responsibility to support them. “We are inviting all people of goodwill to come and support the sisters,” urged Mr. Joseph Kyobe Wambuzi, a committee member. He noted the sisters’ extensive voluntary service in areas like education and healthcare, citing their management of Ediofe Girls Primary and Secondary Schools as key examples. Emergency repairs will begin with the most critical areas, starting with the septic tank.

Monsignor Casto Adeti, Vicar General of Arua Diocese, commended the congregation for its vital contributions to the region over the years. The Congregation of the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu, founded in 1939, has become a cornerstone of social and religious ministry in Northern Uganda.
