Busia Security Crackdown Uncovers Syndicate Behind Livestock Theft Surge

Busia District security agencies have apprehended 11 individuals involved in the butchery trade as part of a significant operation against a syndicate suspected of orchestrating a rise in livestock thefts. The coordinated effort, involving the Flying Squad, Crime Intelligence, uniformed police, and local abattoir leaders, focused on butcheries in Arubaini, Nangwe, Sofia, and along Tororo Road.
District Police Commander Grace Nyangoma confirmed the arrests, reporting the recovery of meat handled unhygienically and packaged in sacks, believed to be from stolen animals. Crucially, the recovered meat lacked the required veterinary stamp, indicating it was processed at unapproved locations, a violation of local regulations that mandate veterinary inspection for all meat sold commercially.
The crackdown was initiated after a farmer in Buchicha Village reported the theft of eight goats in a single night. A police sniffer dog successfully tracked the scent to several butcheries. Investigations revealed that the suspects were using residential homes for clandestine slaughter operations, hiding illegally processed meat to deceive customers and authorities. Some legitimate animals were presented at the official abattoir to maintain a facade of compliance.
This operation comes amidst widespread livestock raids across sub-counties like Masaba, Masafu, Dabani, and Busitema, with Masaba alone reporting over 60 goat thefts in the past month. Police suspect that local contacts are collaborating with thieves to identify targets, facilitating rapid on-site slaughter and discreet transportation of carcasses via motorcycles.
Local farmers have expressed relief, citing significant financial losses due to these thefts, some involving animals purchased with government loans. Abattoir officials noted that the illicit meat was often sold at drastically reduced prices, raising suspicion about its origins. The arrested suspects are currently detained at Busia Police Station, facing charges related to possession of suspected stolen property and robbery.
