Cheptegei Secures Historic Bronze at World Athletics Road Running Championships

Ugandan long-distance running sensation Joshua Cheptegei has once again showcased his remarkable talent on the international stage, earning a bronze medal in the men’s 21km race at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as it represents Uganda’s inaugural medal in the history of this prestigious road running event.

Competing in national colours for the first time since his triumphant 10,000m gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Cheptegei delivered a powerful performance, clocking a personal best of 58 minutes and 26 seconds. While Sweden’s Andreas Almgren took gold and Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir secured silver, Cheptegei’s podium finish is a testament to his enduring prowess.

This latest medal places Cheptegei in elite company within Ugandan athletics, joining Jacob Kiplimo as the only Ugandans to have secured a medal at every major global championship they have participated in, including the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and various World Athletics events.

For Cheptegei, the race served as crucial preparation for upcoming marathon commitments. Despite a slight struggle with a minor foot injury sustained days prior, he managed to overcome the discomfort to secure his place on the podium. “This is my first medal on the road and I feel so happy,” Cheptegei stated post-race, reflecting on the competitive field and his satisfaction with the bronze.

The Copenhagen event also saw other Ugandan athletes compete, with Feb Chelegoi, Mande Bushendich, and Martin Kiprotich participating in the men’s 21km, and Esther Chebet, Rebecca Chelangat, Annet Chemengich, and Esther Chekwemoi in the women’s race. While the other Ugandan runners did not reach the podium, their participation adds to the nation’s presence in global athletics.
