Court Mandates Accurate Reporting in Kyambadde-Kiyaga Election Case

Justice Jamson Karemera of the High Court in Mpigi has issued a clear directive to journalists covering the election petition case involving incumbent Mawokota County MP Amelia Kyambadde and her challenger, musician Hillary Kiyaga Innocent. The judge emphasized the critical need for accurate reporting, urging the media to refrain from publishing information that could potentially mislead the public about the proceedings.
“I ask you the journalists covering this case to please report exactly what happens in court so that the public can consume only true information,” Justice Karemera stated on Monday. This directive comes as preparations intensify for the substantive hearing of the petition, which challenges Ms. Kyambadde’s victory in the January parliamentary elections.
The court has scheduled the main hearing for October 6 and 7. Ahead of these dates, Justice Karemera has ordered both Ms. Kyambadde and Mr. Kiyaga’s legal teams to submit all relevant documents, including Declaration of Results (DR) forms, by September 30. This follows Mr. Kiyaga’s earlier application seeking to compel the Electoral Commission to produce these documents.
Justice Karemera acknowledged the supporters of both candidates for maintaining a peaceful atmosphere during court sessions and assured them that peaceful attendance would be permitted. Supporters of both Ms. Kyambadde and Mr. Kiyaga were seen outside the court, expressing their solidarity through song. The case continues amidst mutual accusations of delaying tactics between the two political camps.
Mr. Kiyaga, who is seeking to unseat Ms. Kyambadde, insists that the DR forms will validate his claims of electoral irregularities. Ms. Kyambadde, meanwhile, expressed her readiness to submit the documents and her desire for a swift conclusion to the petition so she can focus on her constituents’ needs. Official results show Ms. Kyambadde won with 27,075 votes against Mr. Kiyaga’s 24,801.
