Kalangala Landing Site Fire Destroys Over 20 Homes, Businesses

A fierce fire that erupted late Monday evening has left a trail of destruction at Kaazi Malanga landing site in Kalangala District, reducing over 20 homes and various businesses to ashes. The blaze, which began around 9:30 PM, quickly engulfed densely packed wooden structures, destroying not only residential units but also vital commercial spaces like mobile money outlets, bars, salons, and stores stocked with fishing gear and charcoal.

Residents recounted the terrifying moments as the fire, believed to have started from a mandazi business, rapidly spread. In a desperate attempt to contain the inferno, locals resorted to demolishing houses in the fire’s path, a challenging feat given the speed at which the flames moved. The police fire brigade arrived later in the evening and managed to bring the fire under control by midnight, a response that was commended by the community.

The incident highlights the persistent vulnerability of Kalangala’s fishing communities, where closely built wooden structures are a constant fire risk. Ashiraf Ssenoga, the LC1 chairperson, reported significant losses, with families losing money, personal belongings, and motorcycles. He appealed to government agencies for urgent support, emphasizing that many affected residents, some with loans and PDM program obligations, are now “back to zero” with nowhere to sleep or restart their businesses.

This event adds to a worrying pattern of fire outbreaks in Kalangala’s fishing communities. Authorities are urging residents to adhere to physical planning guidelines to mitigate future risks. The district has seen several devastating fires in recent years, underscoring the need for improved disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in these vulnerable areas.
