Kampala University clinches Kenya Woodball Open title

Kampala University (KU) has emerged as the overall champion of the 7th Kenya Woodball Open, held in Thika over the weekend. The Ugandan contingent showcased exceptional skill, particularly captain Mathias Wahala, who clinched the men’s singles gold.

Wahala demonstrated remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, finishing with 92 strokes. His performance was crucial in leading KU to the team title, fending off strong competition from Kenyan players. Ferdinand Wesonga of Kenya took silver, while Juma Ssembuusi from MUBS secured bronze.

Wahala’s success extended beyond the singles event. Partnering with Aisha Nakanjakko, he also secured gold in the mixed doubles, further bolstering KU’s impressive performance. The university’s women’s team also shone, contributing significantly to the overall victory. KU’s women players secured five out of six available gold medals, including a women’s doubles gold for Zawedde and Florence Mukoya.

In the women’s singles, Uganda’s Denise Nanjeru from MUBS claimed the title with 99 strokes, ahead of Noeline Babirye Nalwoga from the University of Kisubi. KU’s Florence Mukoya finished just outside the podium in fourth place.

The strong showing at the Kenya Open highlights the steady growth of woodball in Uganda, particularly within university programs. This success sets a positive precedent for KU as they prepare to defend their title at the upcoming East African University Games.
