Kamuli District Launches Measles-Rubella Vaccination Drive Amidst Sect Resistance

Kamuli District is preparing for a significant five-day measles-rubella vaccination campaign, aiming to reach approximately 110,000 children between the ages of nine months and five years. The initiative, scheduled from October 1 to October 5, targets all eligible children, irrespective of their prior vaccination history.
Local government officials have stressed the importance of community cooperation for the success of this public health measure. Kamuli LCV Chairperson Kaloli Dhizaala has directed local council leaders to ensure maximum participation and identify any individuals or families who resist the vaccination drive.
Dhizaala issued a stern warning to communities, particularly those affiliated with the Gospel Church Volunteers, often referred to as the “Triple Six sect,” who have previously shown resistance to government programs. He stated that any default or resistance to the vaccination campaign will be treated as subversive and dealt with under the Immunisation Act. Leaders have been tasked with maintaining records of vaccinated children and defaulters.
District health officials have confirmed that all preparations, including training health workers, distributing vaccines, and mapping target areas, are complete. While aware of potential challenges from resistant groups, including plans to hide or relocate children, authorities have vowed to apprehend individuals who endanger children’s health.
Religious leaders are also engaging in efforts to address misconceptions. Bishop Edward Munene of the Born Again Christian churches has called for dialogue and accurate information dissemination to counter fears, drawing parallels to past COVID-19 vaccination controversies. He urged fellow religious leaders to counsel their congregations and encourage parents to prioritize their children’s protection through vaccination.
Ministry of Health officials are reinforcing the message that all children within the specified age group must be vaccinated during the campaign period to ensure comprehensive immunity against measles and rubella.
