Kitara FC's Meteoric Rise Culminates in Al Ahly Continental Clash

Kitara FC’s journey from the Fufa Big League to hosting continental powerhouse Al Ahly in a matter of three years is a testament to their rapid ascent in Ugandan football. The Hoima-based club, after winning promotion in 2023, has not only established themselves in the Uganda Premier League but has also achieved significant success, including two Uganda Cup titles and two consecutive fourth-place finishes in the league.

Their current continental campaign in the Caf Confederation Cup has already seen them overcome Mogadishu City 4-1 on aggregate in the preliminary round. Now, they face the daunting yet exciting prospect of playing against Al Ahly, Africa’s most decorated club with a record 12 Caf Champions League titles.

Kitara president Deo Kasozi views this fixture as both a significant challenge and a reward for the club’s hard work. “After Afcon 2027, we are taking over as the league,” Kasozi jested, highlighting the club’s ambition. The club has also focused on making their home ground, Hoima City Stadium, a viable asset, generating substantial revenue from hosting matches and contributing to the region’s infrastructure development.

The growing value of Kitara is also evident in their broadcast deal for the Al Ahly match. Despite receiving a $1 million offer, the club opted for a deal with an Egyptian broadcaster that ensures wider reach across Egypt, Yemen, and the Maghreb, demonstrating their increasing commercial appeal.

While the players and coaching staff acknowledge the strength of their opponent, the focus remains on learning and competing. Coach Wasswa Bbosa stated, “This gives us as coaches an opportunity to gauge ourselves against some of the best on the continent.” The upcoming match on October 17, 2026, at Hoima City Stadium represents more than just a game for Kitara; it signifies their arrival on the continental stage and their transformation from a promotion-chasing side to a club capable of attracting Africa’s elite.
