President Yoweri Museveni has officially communicated Uganda’s commitment to hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, assuring the Confederation of African Football (CAF) of the nation’s readiness.
During a meeting with CAF representatives, Museveni highlighted the significant progress made on the necessary infrastructure, particularly stadiums, which have drawn praise from the visiting technical team. The President emphasized that Uganda is on track to meet the hosting standards required for the continental showpiece.
Beyond the immediate tournament preparations, Museveni articulated a broader vision for regional integration and ease of travel within East Africa. He specifically vowed to “unlock” the potential of a regional single visa, a move that would significantly benefit tourists, business travelers, and sports fans alike, by simplifying cross-border movements within the East African Community (EAC).
This initiative, if realized, is expected to boost tourism and economic activity across the region, making it more attractive for international events and visitors. The President’s commitment underscores Uganda’s role as a key player in fostering regional cooperation and development.
The CAF delegation’s positive assessment of the stadium developments provides a strong endorsement of Uganda’s efforts. The government has been investing heavily in upgrading existing facilities and constructing new ones to meet CAF’s stringent requirements.
President Museveni also indicated a shift in his focus towards upcountry development projects, suggesting a balanced approach to national priorities. However, his engagement with CAF and his advocacy for the regional single visa demonstrate his continued dedication to high-profile national and international initiatives.
