The highly anticipated National Novices Boxing Championship has officially begun, bringing together aspiring boxers from across the country. However, the start of the tournament is overshadowed by a significant concern: a widespread lack of adequate training and competition equipment.
Boxers and their coaches have voiced their frustrations, emphasizing that the shortage of essential gear, such as proper gloves, headguards, and training mats, is hindering their preparation and potentially impacting performance. Many clubs struggle to provide the necessary resources, forcing athletes to train with substandard or makeshift equipment.
Abdul Wahab Wamono, a promising contender from Mbale Boxing Club, expressed his determination to win the championship despite these challenges. He stated that while the dream of success is strong, the lack of proper facilities and equipment makes the journey significantly more arduous.
Officials acknowledge the issue and have appealed for support from stakeholders, including corporate bodies and the government, to invest in boxing infrastructure and equipment. The hope is that improved resources will foster a more competitive environment and help nurture future boxing talent in Uganda.
The championship is expected to run for several days, showcasing raw talent and the resilience of Ugandan boxers who continue to pursue their passion against considerable odds.
