Nun Among Two Fatalities in Rubanda Vehicle Accident

A somber incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Rubanda District, resulting in the deaths of two people. The accident involved a Toyota Noah that reportedly lost control while descending a steep slope on the Kabale-Kisoro road.

According to Kigezi Sub-region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the vehicle, registration number UAX 824H, overturned several times in Murutenga Village, Hamurwa Sub-county. Police suspect excessive speed was a contributing factor to the driver losing control.

Among the deceased was Rev Sr Mary Gorret Tugumenawe Kenda, a 58-year-old nun associated with Rushoroza Parish in the Kabale Diocese. She died at the scene of the crash. Another passenger, an unidentified male, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to Rubanda Hospital.

Several other passengers sustained serious injuries and are receiving medical attention. Among the injured were Jenerus Katushaba, a 47-year-old resident of Rubanda District; Obed Hakiza, a 30-year-old Rwandan national; and Hamis Garuka, aged 54.

Police extended condolences to the bereaved families and the Catholic Church, while also wishing the injured a swift recovery. They urged motorists to prioritize safety, adhere to speed limits, avoid overloading, and ensure their vehicles are in proper mechanical condition before embarking on journeys.
