PLU Kicks Off Mayuge Signature Drive for Muhoozi's 2031 Presidential Ambitions

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has launched a significant signature collection drive in Mayuge District, a move aimed at galvanizing support for its chairman, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as he is being positioned for a potential presidential run in 2031.

The campaign kicked off at the Mayuge District headquarters, drawing attendance from various local leaders, including PLU coordinators, grassroots mobilisers, sub-county chairpersons aligned with the group, and National Resistance Movement (NRM) officials and Members of Parliament from the district.

PLU has been undertaking a nationwide effort to secure endorsements for Kainerugaba, with an ambitious target of collecting 20 million signatures. In Mayuge, the process involves registering supporters at the sub-county level, with each voluntary signature counted towards endorsing Kainerugaba’s candidature.

Organizers stated that a larger rally is planned post-Mayuge to announce the total number of signatures collected in the district. Joshua Kyakuva, the PLU Mayuge District coordinator, emphasized that the initiative is crucial for establishing the group’s grassroots structures leading up to 2031. He noted that PLU is targeting over 240,000 supporters within Mayuge District alone.

Members of Parliament present, such as Aggrey Bagiire of Bunya West, defended Kainerugaba’s right to seek the presidency, dismissing concerns about it becoming a “family affair” and asserting that it is a constitutional right for any eligible Ugandan. Bagiire indicated that some NRM members are participating due to shared objectives between the two organizations, referring to the NRM as the “mother” of PLU.

Supporters at the event expressed confidence in Kainerugaba’s readiness for national leadership, citing his perceived understanding of ordinary Ugandans’ aspirations, his focus on development, and his stance against corruption. The initiative was described as significant by representatives of the Third Deputy Prime Minister, Hajjat Rukia Isanga Nakadama, who noted its alignment with the ruling party’s programs.

This Mayuge drive is a key component of PLU’s broader strategy to mobilize support and gather endorsements for General Kainerugaba across the country, solidifying his potential candidacy for the 2031 elections.
