President Museveni to grace Prince Nyabongo's coronation in Tooro

President Yoweri Museveni will be the chief guest at the coronation of Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi Nyabongo I, marking a significant endorsement of the Tooro Kingdom’s new leadership. The confirmation was announced by the Central Organising Committee, which has been coordinating preparations at Karuziika Palace.

This high-profile attendance reassures the kingdom following a period of uncertainty regarding government recognition. Fr. Charles Oyo, chairperson of the publicity committee, highlighted the President’s involvement as a “major breakthrough,” emphasizing that it signifies the central government’s full support and collaboration with the kingdom. “It is no longer a small function; it is now a big event,” Fr. Oyo stated, underscoring the importance of the President’s personal commitment.

The President’s confirmed presence follows earlier indications from the government about delaying official engagement until succession disputes within the kingdom were resolved. Historically, President Museveni has had a close relationship with the Tooro monarchy, even participating in the 1995 coronation of the late Omukama Oyo.

Preparations for the coronation are progressing despite recent emotional challenges within the royal family. Rumors of a postponement have been dismissed, and palace renovations are underway to prepare the royal residence for the new King. The organizing committee is also appealing for public contributions to meet the event’s Shs925 million budget.

Culturally, Prince Nyabongo I is undergoing traditional rites, including guidance from ritualists and the ceremonial sounding of royal drums. He is expected to move to Rwengoma Palace on September 26 before a final procession to Karuziika Palace on the night of September 28, leading up to the coronation the following day.
