Kampala’s public health facilities are facing a severe crisis, with patients being treated in walkways and corridors due to extreme overcrowding. Expectant mothers are often forced to sit or lie on the floor while awaiting care, highlighting a critical lack of space and resources.
This dire situation has prompted the State House Health Monitoring Unit (SHMU) to launch a comprehensive, six-week assessment of health services across the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) facilities. The investigation will scrutinize financial resource allocation, address critical staff shortages, and examine the drug supply chain.
The probe seeks to identify and rectify operational gaps that are negatively impacting both patients and healthcare workers. A key focus will be on ensuring that medicines reach the end-user effectively and are not diverted or stolen, as previously indicated by internal audit reports concerning expiring drug supplies.
The SHMU, led by Dr. Warren Naamara, met with KCCA officials, including Minister Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, to discuss collaborative efforts to enhance healthcare outcomes in the city. The initiative aims to bring much-needed improvements to the struggling public health sector.
