Supreme Court Affirms Murder Convictions in Kasiwukira Case

The highest court in Uganda has brought a long-standing legal battle to a close by affirming the convictions of Police Constable Jaden Ashraf and Sandra Nakungu in the murder of businessman Eriya Sebunya Bugembe, widely known as Kasiwukira.
In a ruling delivered on September 17th, a five-judge panel of the Supreme Court found no grounds to overturn the guilty verdict and the subsequent 20-year prison sentences. This decision upholds the earlier judgments made by the High Court and confirmed by the Court of Appeal.
The appellants had based their challenge on the argument that the prosecution’s case relied heavily on circumstantial evidence. However, the Supreme Court was not persuaded by this line of reasoning.
The original conviction took place in 2016, following an investigation into the 2014 death of the prominent businessman. The case has traversed multiple levels of the Ugandan judiciary, culminating in this final decision.
The Supreme Court’s verdict signifies the end of the legal process for Ashraf and Nakungu concerning the murder of Kasiwukira, solidifying the sentences imposed upon them.
