Tooro Kingdom Restricts Food, Livestock for Nyabongo I Enthronement

Preparations are in full swing for the enthronement of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Nyabongo I, slated for September 29, 2026, at Karuziika Palace. The organizing committee has announced a significant restriction on certain food items and livestock permitted within the palace grounds for the ceremony.

Items such as pigs, chickens, goats, sweet potatoes, cassava, and beans will not be allowed into Karuziika Palace. According to Moses Musinguzi, a spokesperson for the organizing committee, these measures are in place to uphold the dignity and cultural sanctity of the occasion, which marks the formal commencement of Nyabongo I’s reign as the Omukama of Tooro.

While the committee acknowledges and appreciates contributions from various individuals and institutions, they have issued a specific appeal to the nine counties comprising Tooro Kingdom. Each county is requested to contribute at least Shs1 million and two cows, alongside other acceptable food supplies. This request aims to ensure sufficient provisions for the thousands of guests expected to attend.

The enthronement ceremony follows the selection of Nyabongo I by the Babiito Royal Clan and his endorsement by the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council on September 15. The event is scheduled to blend religious observances with traditional royal rituals, beginning with Nyabongo’s procession from Rwengoma Palace to Karuziika Palace on the night of September 28. Traditional activities, including a mock battle, will precede his formal enthronement at the royal throne the following day. A church service at St John’s Cathedral will precede the main enthronement ceremony.

Nyabongo I is set to succeed the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away on August 27, 2026. The organizing committee has extended invitations to various dignitaries, including traditional leaders, government officials, and religious figures, for the momentous occasion.
